MATTHEW 11:28-30 LECTIO DIVINA PART 3
PRAYING THE WORD - CONTEMPLATING THE WORD - DOING THE WORD
Please read Introduction to Lectio Divina for the structure and underlying principles involved.
Stage 3 Praying the Word of God
Background chant (barely audible): Kyrie eleison 1 (6+ seconds)
Group leader:
God has spoken to us in his Word, now let us speak to God in prayer. You will hear prayers of praise and thanksgiving, petition and intercession. Please feel free to express your own prayers aloud and brief, or in silence.
Background chant (barely audible): Kyrie eleison (6+ seconds)
• I thank you Lord for the invitation to come to you, to stand in your presence today. Thank you for making me your home, unworthy though I am.
Allow plenty of time for others to express their prayers.
• I praise you and thank you for your example of humility. You emptied yourself of the glory you had with the Father to be born here on earth in an animals feeding box for our sakes.
Allow plenty of time for others to express their prayers.
• Help me to be meek and humble and to be a channel of your love to draw others to you.
Allow plenty of time for others to express their prayers.
• I humbly ask that you give me the grace to see myself as you see me and as I am with your holy presence within.
Allow plenty of time for others to express their prayers.
5 minutes.
Background chant (barely audible): Kyrie eleison (6+ seconds)
Stage 4 Contemplating the Word of God
Group leader:
On the entrance door of our church we read “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Now let us be still, let us empty ourselves so that we may be filled with the divine presence.
Let us contemplate the Word of God. Let us think nothing, say nothing, do nothing. Let us simply rest in the Word of God and allow it to reach deep down, to take root and bear fruit. We are temples of the Holy Spirit. In deep humility and stillness, let us allow the Holy Spirit to interact with our spirit as we rest in his presence. Let us adore, in silence, the Christ before us and the Christ within us.
Background chant (barely audible): Kyrie eleison (6+ seconds)
Contemplation 10+ minutes
Now let us open our eyes and when ready gradually come out of the spirit of contemplation.
Background chant (barely audible): Kyrie eleison (6+ seconds)
Stage 5 Doing the Word
We have heard the Word of God and meditated on it. Now, it is time to do the Word, to put it into practice. In addition to what the Holy Spirit has inspired in us, here are three suggestions.
• When in difficulty, under provocation or facing temptation let us descend deep down to our spirit and let the indwelling Christ live in and through us. We shall gradually experience the rest of Christ.
• Let us come 15-20 minutes before Mass and do this same exercise using the readings at Mass.
• During our conversations let us share our experience of Christ to at least two people this coming week.
